Picture and Sound Show: FAQ

This page contains instructions for common tasks, and some of the questions frequently asked by users of the Picture and Sound Show.

1. How do I configure the Picture and Sound Show?

To configure the Picture and Sound Show, right-click on the Windows desktop, select "Properties" from the menu, and click on the "Screen Saver" tab. Make sure that the "Picture and Sound Show" is the selected screen saver (the lion picture should appear), and then press the "Settings" button.

2. How do I create a new collection (slide show)?

Click on the New Collection button located in the bottom left corner of the Picture and Sound Show configuration dialog box. You must specify a unique name for the new collection. You can inherit the settings from an existing collection.

3. How do I make the Picture and Sound Show display all the pictures in a particular folder?

There are two ways to do this, depending on the contents of the folder. If the folder only contains picture files, and you want all these files to be displayed, do the following:

  • Add the folder by pressing the "Folder..." button in the Pictures tab. You can also drag the folder into the picture file list.

However, if the folder contains files that are not pictures, or if it contains some picture files that you do not want to be displayed, then the best thing to do is use wildcards. For example, to display all the bitmaps in the "C:\Images" folder, add a picture file with the name "C:\Images\*.bmp". This requires the following steps:

  • Add one of the required picture files by pressing the "Add..." button in the Pictures tab. You can also drag the file into the picture file list.
  • Select the picture file that you have just added.
  • Press the "Edit..." button, which will open the "Edit File Name" dialog box.
  • Press the "All in Folder" button to replace the required part of the file name with a "*" wildcard, and then press "OK".

Both of the above methods can also be used to play all the sounds in a particular folder.

4. How do I add support for new sound types?

The Picture and Sound Show can play any sound file type supported by the Windows Media Player. However, it assumes that certain sound types are supported (WAV, MIDI, MP3, SND, AU and AIFF). You can view and change the list of supported sound types by selecting the Sound Options tab. To add a sound type, press the "New..." button, which will open the "New Sound File Type" dialog box. Here you can specify a name, file extensions, and MCI handler for the new sound type.

5. How do I synchronize pictures and sounds?

There are two ways to synchronize displaying pictures and playing sounds:

  • In the Picture Options tab, select the "Synchronized with the next sound change" option. This will cause the next picture to be displayed when the current sound finishes playing. In other words, there will be one picture per sound, and one sound per picture.
  • In the Sound Options tab, select the "Synchronized with the next picture change" option. This will cause the next sound to be played when the current picture finishes being displayed. As pictures are displayed for a certain length of time (which may be shorter than the length of the sound being played), there will never be more than one sound per picture, but there may be more than one picture per sound.

If both of the above options are selected, the first option will take precedence.

6. How do I create a screen saver to distribute to my friends and family?

The Picture and Sound Show can create new screen savers that you can either use on your PC or distribute to other people. To create a screen saver, perform the following steps:

  • Create a collection with the desired picture files, sound files, and configuration settings.
  • Press the Create Screen Saver button located under the list of collections. This will open the "Create Screen Saver" dialog box.
  • Select the name of the collection you have just defined, choose a name for the new screen saver, and select the "Copy picture and sound files into screen saver data file" option.
  • Press the "Create..." button to start creating the new screen saver.
  • When the creation process has completed, a message box will tell you the names and locations of the files that have been created. You can then distribute these files to your friends and family.

The best way to send the two files created by the Picture and Sound Show is to compress them into a single zip file. The person who receives the zip file must extract the two files into their Windows System directory.

Note that the Picture and Sound Show license prohibits the sale, rent, lease or loan of created screen savers. You are permitted to distribute created screen savers as long as you give them away, you do not profit from this activity, and everyone you give them to agrees to abide by the Picture and Sound Show license.

7. Is the Picture and Sound Show Y2K compliant?

Yes, the software is fully Y2K compliant. However, as "by file date" is one of the sort orders in the Picture Options tab and Sound Options tab, you should ensure that both your PC and Windows are also Y2K compliant.

8. Can I store my picture and sound files on a floppy disk?

While it is possible to load picture and sound files from a floppy disk, or any other removable media, this will obviously be slower than loading them from a hard disk. Also, the disk must be present when the Picture and Sound Show is activated.

In the past, one of the reasons to use removable media was to enable the set of pictures and sounds to be changed without altering the Picture and Sound Show configuration. However, this can now be done by setting up collections, and so the use of removable media is no longer recommended.

9. I have downloaded the Picture and Sound Show - do I need to uninstall the older version I have running at present?

No, you do not need to uninstall the old version. The setup program will by default install the new version over the top of the older version. In fact, if you uninstall the old version, you will lose your configured settings.
