Picture and Sound Show: Technical Support This page contains some of the problems that users of the Picture and Sound Show have experienced, and solutions to these problems.
The Picture and Sound Show installs into the Windows System directory, the contents of which are hidden in later versions of Windows. It also uses the standard Windows screen saver interface, which is why the Picture and Sound Show does not appear on the Start menu. To configure the Picture and Sound Show, right-click on the Windows desktop, select "Properties" from the menu, and click on the "Screen Saver" tab. Make sure that the "Picture and Sound Show" is the selected screen saver (the lion picture should appear), and then press the "Settings" button.
You need to create a new collection before adding pictures and sounds. To do
this, click on the
You need to send the two files that the Picture and Sound Show created. These are called "<name>.scr" and "<name>.pss", where <name> is the screen saver name that you chose when you made the screen saver. You will find both files in the Windows System directory (normally called "c:\windows\system" or "c:\winnt\system32"). You may need to change your Windows Explorer settings in order to see the files, and you may also need to click on "Show Files" to view the contents of the directory. The best way to distribute the two files is to create an installation program using a package like Wise or InstallShield. If you have such a program, tell it to install the two files into the Windows System directory. If you don't have Wise or InstallShield, you should use WinZip or PKZip to zip up the two files into a single ".zip" file, ready for distribution. Whoever receives the zip file should extract the contents into their Windows System directory. Note that you do not need to send the original picture and sound files with your screen saver, as these are included in the ".pss" file.
This error normally occurs when one of the files that make up the Microsoft Media Player is either damaged or missing. Please view article Q139806 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base to see an explanation of the problem, and how you can replace the missing or damaged files.
This error normally occurs when one of the Windows multimedia drivers is either damaged or missing. Please view article Q178677 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base to see an explanation of the problem, and how you can replace the missing or damaged drivers.
If you have created more than one collection, you must set the collection
options. To do this, click on the Note that the "when the screen saver has been run" option means exactly that - the collection will only be changed once the Picture and Sound Show has been run the given number of times. It does not cause the collection to be changed after it has been used the given number of times - this option will be added to a future release of the Picture and Sound Show.
You apply a background image by clicking on the "Advanced" tab, selecting one of the "Centered", "Tiled" or "Borders" options, and then browsing for a picture file to use as the background pattern. A preview of your selection will be shown. If you find that all of the background options are disabled, this probably means that you have transition effects enabled. Unfortunately, you cannot have both transitions and a background pattern - you will have to choose which you want the most. |
